I would like to add my bit here.

I have to disagree with e-solutions on this.

An SSL cert DOES NOT protect the customers credit card data after the customer has closed down their broswer.
An SSL cert DOES NOT make a shopping cart website PCI DSS compliant because an SSL cert has nothing to do with what happens to the credit card details once the customer closes down their browser.

If a shopping cart uses SSL then the connection is encrypted between the cart and the customer's browser, that all. To be totally safe in accordance with the PCI DSS the cart and its software, its hosting account, the network it is on and the server and IP address all needs to be audited to ensure it complies to PCI DSS requirements.

So even if you have a real time gateway that's PCI DSS compliant if your website so much as touches credit card data then it needs to be PCI DSS compliant. Having an SSL cert is only one of the requirements of the PCI DSS.

But if you use a PCI DSS compliant manual payment gateway then you get all this included in the package.
